ALBERT T. DEROOSE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
An active trucking industry leader on both the national and state levels, Albert T. DeRoose was a veteran of World War II, seeing action in North Africa and Italy before being assigned duty in the Philippines. Immediately after the war he founded the Auburn Freight Delivery Company. In 1963, he became an executive for Red Star Express Lines of Auburn, Inc. and served as their vice president until his death.
Mr. DeRoose, a giant in the trucking industry, always placed an emphasis on truck safety. In 1966 and 1967 he served as chairman of the NYS Council of Safety Supervisors and was elected chairman of the Eastern Region Council of Safety Supervisors in 1971. His success in these roles led to his selection as national chairman of the ATA Council of Safety Supervisors in 1976.
In New York he was among the initial appointees to the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee established in 1967 and continued to serve on that committee under appointments by four governors until his death in 1987. Mr. DeRoose was always an advocate of higher education, particularly for those of modest means. It was in this spirit that the Trucking Association of New York’s board of directors chose a scholarship program as the most appropriate means for remembering Mr. DeRoose and the countless hours he devoted to making the trucking industry safer.
